What changed with the Stage 3 tax cuts?

From 1 July 2024, the Australian Government's revised Stage 3 tax cuts delivered meaningful relief across a wide range of incomes:

  • The 19% rate was cut to 16% (effectively)
  • The 32.5% threshold rose from $120k to $135,000
  • The 37% threshold rose from $180k to $190,000
  • Low and middle income earners received larger cuts than originally legislated

Medicare Levy & Low Income Tax Offset

Medicare Levy

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. You're exempt if income is below $26,000 (singles, 2024–25). A reduced levy applies between $26,000 and $32,500. High-income earners without private hospital cover may also pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge (1%–1.5%).

Low Income Tax Offset (LITO)

LITO reduces your tax payable by up to $700 if income is below $37,500. It phases out at 5c per dollar between $37,500 and $45,000, then at 1.5c per dollar up to $66,667. It does not reduce the Medicare levy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tax-free threshold in Australia for 2024–25? +
The tax-free threshold is $18,200. You pay no income tax on the first $18,200 of taxable income. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) of up to $700 further reduces tax for incomes up to $66,667, effectively raising the tax-free threshold to around $21,887.
Do I have to pay the Medicare levy? +
Most Australian residents pay the Medicare levy of 2% on taxable income. You're exempt if income is below $26,000 (singles, 2024–25). A reduced levy applies between $26,000 and $32,500. Non-residents are not liable for the Medicare levy.
What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge? +
The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is 1%–1.5% extra tax for singles earning over $93,000 who don't hold private hospital cover. This calculator shows the standard Medicare levy only — add 1%–1.5% to the result if you're above the MLS threshold without private cover.
How much tax do I pay on $100,000? +
On $100,000 for 2024–25: income tax is $24,167 (before LITO), Medicare levy is $2,000. After LITO of $0 (fully phased out at this income), total tax is approximately $26,167 — an effective rate of 26.2%. Your take-home would be roughly $73,833.
How is the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) calculated? +
LITO is $700 for incomes up to $37,500. It reduces by 5c per dollar between $37,500 and $45,000 (down to $325), then by 1.5c per dollar up to $66,667 where it phases out completely. It reduces your income tax payable but not the Medicare levy.
